Thus it is that there are few men in the world who love and at the same time know the bad qualities of the object of their love, or who hate and yet know the excellences of the object of their hatred.

人謂衆人 之猶於也 　猶偏也 五者在人 本有當然之則 然常人之情 惟其所向而不可察焉 則必陷於一偏 而身不修矣

Hence it is said, in the common adage,"A man does not know the wickedness of his son; he does not know the richness of his growing corn."

諺俗語也 溺愛者不明 貪得者無厭 是則偏之爲害而家之所以不齊也

This is what is meant by saying that if the person be not cultivated, a man cannot regulate his family.
